Saturday Perspectives - Having Fun and Giving Back
September 13th, 2008 Categories: North Raleigh, Odds and Ends

Today was a really big day for lots of people. Most importantly, it was a big day for the countless number of families whose lives will be touched by North Raleigh Ministries in the coming year. North Raleigh Ministries is a faith based organization whose mission is simply to make sure no family in our community ever goes hungry.
It was a big day for lots of runners, serious and recreational. They got to compete and have a blast on a beautiful day.
It was a big day for kids who participated in the little guys 100 yard dash. They had a ball!
And it was a big day for a bunch of volunteers who got to see months careful planning and hard work come to fruition. I was one of those most fortunate people.
There is something to be said for doing something for another. It just plain makes you feel good. And it makes you feel good about the people you did it with too.
There is always something worth getting involved in going on in the Raleigh area. The North Hills 5K was held at Trinity Baptist Church today. I’m glad I was blessed with the opportunity to be part of it.
There are things happening every day all over our wonderful area. Things that help others while giving individuals a chance to do something of lasting value with their time. I hope all of you get a chance to be a part of something like this real soon. You’ll be glad you did, And I can guarantee there will be someone, somewhere, who will be grateful you did too.

Any runners out there? How about anyone looking for some good family fun time on a morning in September? If that’s you, come on out for the second annual North Hills 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 13.
The event is being presented by Trinity Baptist Church, to raise funds for North Raleigh Ministries (NRM). NRM is a non-profit organization to help insure that none of our neighbors will ever have to go hungry. It was established to meet the needs of individuals and families with emergency situations who live in the North Raleigh community.
This is a fairy good size, official 5K race. It will be a timed race for all the serious runners that participate. And if running’s not your thing, just come on out for a walk, stroll, or just to have fun. Last year there were almost 300 participants and this year promised to be even bigger.
Here are the entry fees and participant levels:
- $18 North Hills 5K (the official race)
- $10 Midtown 1 Mile Fun Run
- $10 Senior Stroll (60 and over)
- $5 100 Yard Kid’s Dash
To register, go to www.active.com, click on running and enter North Hills in the search box.
After the race, hot dogs and refreshments will be available. I’m on the lead team organizing the event, so I’ll be there somewhere helping out. I hope to see you there!

North Raleigh Homes For Sale - Bedford Still Going Strong
May 29th, 2008 Categories: Bedford, New Construction Homes, North Raleigh
The Bedford neighborhood in North Raleigh has been one huge success story. This neighborhood has won multiple awards for design and planning. Once you visit Bedford, you’ll understand why.
The neighborhood is full of tree lined streets, sidewalks on both sides of the street, parks and common areas, ponds, walking trails, a community center with swimming pools and tennis courts. There is even a four sided clock in an old fashioned town square. Just hang out for a bit and you will see kids playing in the parks, adults running and walking dogs. People stopping by a neighbor’s porch to chat for a while. Yes, the old fashioned community feeling is alive and well in Bedford.
And don’t fret if you have been on the fence waiting to buy a home in this great community. There are plenty of opportunities left and the neighborhood amenities just keep on getting better and better.
The latest phase of Bedford is now open and there are about 20 homes in inventory at any given time. This new phase is called the Wainwright Collection and features some of the area’s very best builders. Well known custom builders such as Houseman, Woodard, Tingen, CityScape, Rice, and Timberline are building some really great homes that will keep the Bedford building tradition going for a few more years.
The first phases of Bedford sold really well despite a common comment that the yard sizes were a bit on the small size. With a neighborhood design such as Bedford, with so much common area and walking trails and sidewalks, small lot sizes have worked much better that you might think. However, the developer has listened to the feedback and responded with larger lot sizes in the new phase.
Home sites are now 1/3 acre minimum with some cul-de-sac lots measuring even bigger. There are even basement lots available. Almost unheard of in the Raleigh real estate market.
There are some brand new neighborhood amenities on the way that will make Bedford an even more convenient place to live. A new commercial center is under construction near the clock tower. There will be a day care center, fitness center and an Italian restaurant for starters. Once these things take off, who knows what will be next.
Home prices for finished inventory range from $217,000 for townhomes to $700,000 for some incredible homes with tons of custom details. If you haven’t checked out Bedford in North Raleigh yet, you owe it to yourself to pay a visit. If you would like a personal tour of some of the finished homes, or want to take a look at available lots for per-sale opportunities, just give me a call at 919-602-7000, or send me an email.

North Wake Landfill Closing This Spring | Falls River Homeowners Hardly Knew It Was There
January 9th, 2008 Categories: North Raleigh
Falls River property values were never really affected by the presence of the massive North Wake Landfill. A testimony as to how careful neighborhood planning, and a modern landfill, make for a peaceful existence between such unlikely neighbors.
Falls River in North Raleigh has been an interesting kind of experiment for our market. It was one of the first neo-classic neighborhoods built on such a large scale in our area. It was also built right beside of a very large landfill. The landfill was there first, so the developers knew what they were getting involved in.

Raleigh Gets Trader Joe’s
November 21st, 2007 Categories: Inside the Beltline, North Raleigh, Why Move to Raleigh?

Finally, clients relocating to Raleigh won’t have to give up their weekly trips to Trader Joe’s! It’s been rumored for months, but now it’s official. Trader Joe’s is opening a store in Raleigh. The specialty grocer has confirmed that it will open the Raleigh store in Holly Park shopping center, which is located on Wake Forest Road near I-440.
All the company is saying right now is that the store will be approximately 12,000 square feet and will open by 2009. I’m sure many of the loyal Trader Joe’s fans who have moved here from other parts of the country they served will be pleased when the store opens. I hope they hurry!
This will actually be the third Trader Joe’s location in the Triangle area. I think this says good things about our area! There is also a store in Cary and one in Chapel Hill. I personally don’t live close enough to the Cary location to make it a regular stop for day-to-day shopping, but the time or two that I have stopped in, I was quite impressed. The store was full of great foods, many of which cannot be found in the more traditional grocery store.
Trader Joe’s is regarded as an upscale grocer and this should be really good for the Holly Park shopping center. The strip style shopping center has languished for years without any big draw names. Trader Joe’s could change that. And it doesn’t hurt that the shopping center was purchased a few months ago by Lat Purser & Associates who has plans to give the center a much needed overhaul.
The renovated shopping center could easily serve home owners from Raleigh’s Inside the Beltline area and Midtown neighborhoods. Any comments from readers in cities where Trader Joe’s is located?
